Auto Insurance statistics show that roughly One million vehicles in the US are stolen each year. Here are some tips on how to protect your vehicle.

Lock your vehicle at all times.

Purchase an alarm system or anti-theft device.

Refrain from leaving your keys in the ignition when you are not in the vehicle.

Purchase a vehicle made after 2003.

According to Edmunds;

Ford Aerostars and GM trucks made before 1998 as well as Toyota Camrys are easy to steal.

Hondas, Acuras and GMCs made before the year 2000 can be started with a pair of scissors making them easy targets.

Vehicles made after 2003 are more difficult to steal because they have a laser-cut key.

Carmakers may come up with new anti-theft devices year after year but the thieves quickly catch up with the latest technology. Therefore, your ultimate defense is to have the proper comprehensive auto insurance in the event that your vehicle becomes the target of a wise thief.

Protect your vehicle by getting a free no fault insurance quote and save up to $500 a year on your auto insurance.

The auto insurance industry is very competitive with many companies to choose from. You will be asked multiple questions to help determine your premium. Some factors that the insurance company may consider when giving you a quote are:

The age of your vehicle. The newer the vehicle . . . the higher the insurance premium.

Where your vehicle is kept. Is it safe in your garage? Or is it left parked on the street or in a public parking lot where it could be more easily damaged or stolen?

Where your vehicle is driven. Do you commute to a big city or do you live and work in a rural area?

The amount of miles driven per week. The less you drive the lower the risk.

Be informed when purchasing insurance. See the Auto Fact Sheet for more examples of How to Save

Most people work hard for the things they accumulate over their lifetime (ie. home, money, stocks, land, etc). Yet, when we are responsible for a car accident that causes property damage or injuries to another; we risk losing much of what we have worked for. This is why it is important to protect ourselves by obtaining the right insurance coverage.

Property Damage Liability Coverage: Pays for damage to the property of others (ie: vehicle, mailbox, telephone pole, etc) that you, a family member or a permissive user caused when driving a covered automobile.

The minimal mandatory Property Damage Liability Coverage required in Florida is $25,000. However, higher limits are recommended if you can afford it. With the rising costs of vehicle parts, labor and vehicle replacement $25,000 just does not go as far as it used to. There is also the possibility of damaging more than one vehicle in an accident which could easily push the damages owed over the state minimum causing you to pay the difference out of your own pocket.

Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: Pays for injury related damages of another person due to an accident involving a covered automobile that you, a family member or a permissive user are liable for. This coverage also pays to defend you against any lawsuit filed against you, a family member or a permissive user by an injured party. This is not a mandatory coverage in Florida. However, if you have assets it is wise to purchase this coverage to properly protect yourself.

For more information on the types of insurance coverages . . . see the official Florida DMV website.

To obtain a free quote visit No Fault Insurance and save up to $500 a year on your Florida Auto Insurance.

When you buy a car, you often buy jumper cables, a first aid kit, flashlight, and other car accessories for the “just in case I need it” event. There is one more event that you can make a purchase for: a car accident. We visited our local Walmart store and found the American Red Cross branded Accident Documentation Kit. The price for this car accident kit was a low $7.96. The American Red Cross car accident documentation kit includes:

Accident Documentation Kit Case

Tape Measure

Small Flashlight

Disposable Camera

Accident Report Form

Pen

2 AAA Batteries

You could make your own car accident documentation kit, however, the price of this and competing kits are low. The kit is small enough in size to fit in a glove box or under a seat. The included pieces such as a disposable camera are cheap enough that you don’t need to worry about leaving them in your car over night, as would be the case for a digital camera or phone camera.

Be prepared. Purchase a car accident documentation kit.

Seat belts protect us from being thrown from our vehicle, and even help the driver stay in control during a defensive maneuver. Statistics show that if you are thrown from your vehicle, your risk of death is five times greater. So why do people still insist on NOT wearing their seat belts when they drive?

Florida and other states have enacted seat belt laws to nudge drivers and passengers into wearing their seat belts – always. The Florida seat belt law applies to any car manufactured since 1968. It is against the law in the state of Florida to operate a car if all the passengers are not restrained in a lawful way.

All passengers in the front seat must wear a seat belt.

All passengers under the age of 18 must wear a seat belt.

Children under 4 must be secured in a federally approved child restraint seat.

Children ages 4 and 5 must be secured by either a federally approved child restraint seat or a safety belt.

The driver of the car is responsible for buckling up any child, and ensuring that all passengers follow the law.

The cost for a seat belt violation in the state of Florida is $30. If a child is not properly restrained, the violation is higher at $60. It does not matter if you are jumping in the car for a short trip around the block, just got in the car, or other common excuses. Florida’s seat belt law says that you must always buckle up. Visit the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles web site to learn more about this Florida seat belt law and no fault insurance.

It’s never a good excuse to save money by driving without car insurance, but what happens if you are involved in a car accident and you are uninsured? Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says that you should attempt to purchase a full liability insurance policy as soon as possible. Doing so might get you some assistance from your new insurance company.

Of course you will need to advise the car insurance company that you were involved in a car accident without the proper insurance coverage. In the state of Florida, driving without car insurance can lead to getting your driver’s license suspended.

Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) suggests that you try to negotiate with the other driver involved or their insurance company to settle any damages. If you are unable to pay for such damages, try to negotiate a monthly payment agreement. Document the agreement (put it in writing) to legitimize it and keep proof of payments in your household files. Paying by check, for example, is a great method of proving payments.

Remember, that if the car insurance company compensates the other person for their damages, the insurance company will in turn seek satisfaction of damages from you. If injuries are involved, contact an Florida attorney that specializes in car accidents to better understand your rights. Many attorneys offer a free initial consultation.
